A Bottle Inspired By The City We Call Home
When creating Manchester Rum, we knew the liquid inside the bottle was only part of the story.
After spending more than five years developing what would eventually become our first aged spirit, we wanted to ensure the whole product felt every bit as considered as the liquid inside.
The challenge was an interesting one.
We knew Manchester Rum needed to feel connected to everything we had already built through The Spirit of Manchester Distillery, while still having an identity entirely of its own.
It needed to feel familiar.
But different.
Recognisable.
But intriguing.
And ultimately, worthy of marking the beginning of a completely new chapter for our distillery.
Building On What Came Before
Over the last decade, Manchester Gin has become the product people know us for.
Its custom bottle has become instantly recognisable and has helped shape the visual identity people associate with our distillery.
As Manchester Rum developed, we knew we wanted to retain that connection.
The bottle itself remains part of the same family and sits naturally alongside everything we have created so far.
But this was never simply another extension of Manchester Gin.
Manchester Rum represents something entirely new for us.
It marks the beginning of our journey into aged spirits and a more mature, considered side of what we do as distillers.
The bottle needed to reflect that shift.
Creating A New Identity
One of the earliest design decisions we made was to move away from the bold “Bee” that has become so closely associated with Manchester Gin.
While it has served as an important part of our brand identity for years, Manchester Rum needed to signal something different.
We wanted this bottle to carry more intrigue.
More detail.
More texture.
Something that encouraged people to take a second look.
A design that immediately felt more layered and reflective of the complexity of the spirit itself.
The result needed to feel familiar enough to sit within The Spirit of Manchester family, while standing confidently on its own.
The Creative Brief
When it came to designing Manchester Rum, we knew exactly what we didn’t want.
Manchester is a city with an incredibly rich industrial history and it’s easy to lean into those familiar references — mills, cotton, manufacturing and heritage.
But for this project, that never felt quite right.
Manchester Rum represents a new chapter for us as a distillery, and we wanted the bottle to reflect the Manchester we know today.
Modern.
Evolving.
Architectural.
Confident.
To help bring that vision to life, we partnered with a creative agency called Fun Agency, whose work had come recommended and who immediately understood what we were trying to achieve.
From the very beginning, the brief was clear. This was not about looking backwards but about capturing modern Manchester.
The Lightbulb Moment
Sometimes inspiration appears unexpectedly.
On a bright spring morning driving into the distillery, surrounded by the ever-changing skyline that now defines so much of Manchester city centre, something suddenly clicked.
Looking out across the glass towers and contemporary architecture surrounding the distillery, we were struck by the strong vertical lines repeating across the buildings around us.
It felt unmistakably Manchester.
But importantly, it felt like the Manchester we live and work in every day.
Not the city’s past but its present. And its future.
We pulled over, took photographs immediately and sent them straight across to the design team.
This was the moment everything came together.
This was the direction we wanted the bottle to take.
It quickly became a case of if you know, you know.
The Skyline In The Label
Those architectural references became central to the final design.
The strong vertical detailing that now runs across the front label directly reflects the city skyline surrounding our distillery.
The clean silver-grey lines create structure, movement and a sense of quiet confidence while subtly echoing the modern buildings that helped inspire the design in the first place.
It gives the bottle weight. And a sense of sophistication that felt entirely fitting for the spirit inside.
For those who know Manchester well, the reference feels instantly familiar.
For everyone else, it simply feels beautifully considered, which is exactly what we wanted.
A Quiet Nod To Manchester Weather
There is another subtle reference hidden within the design.
The soft grey detailing running vertically through the label creates a second visual interpretation familiar to anyone who knows the city well.
Rain.
A quiet nod to the weather that has become synonymous with Manchester itself.
The pattern creates movement across the bottle while subtly anchoring the design back to the city that inspired it.
Because even in the smallest details, we wanted this bottle to feel unmistakably Manchester.
A Bottle Designed To Reflect The Liquid Inside
Manchester Rum has spent more than five years quietly ageing, evolving and developing complexity.
We wanted the bottle to reflect those same qualities.
Something more mature than our classic gin bottle.
Something with greater depth and detail.
Something that invited curiosity.
The liquid inside represents a new chapter for us as distillers and the bottle needed to do exactly the same.
